To wrap up this week, we’re covering four more amazing women in a rapid fire edition of Women’s Month. 

Marion Barbara “Joe” Carstairs

  • Was a speed boat champion, cross-dressing, lesbian, that was also an heiress to an oil fortune
  • During World War I, Carstairs served in France with the American Red Cross, where she drove ambulances
  • Post WWI she served with the Royal Army Service Corps in France

Pat Summitt

  • An American women’s college basketball head coach who totaled 1,098 career wins–the most in NCAA basketball history
  • She was the head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols for 38 years before being forced to retire due to a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease
  • She won eight NCAA championships, which is only second to the ten titles won by UCLA’s men’s coach, John Wooden and the 11 titles won by UConn women’s coach Geno Auriemma

Nadia Comaneci

  • A Romanian-born gymnast and five-time Olympic gold medalist
  • The first ever gymnast to receive a perfect score of 10.0 at the Olympic Games but she didn’t stop there. She would be awarded six more perfect scores at the 1976 Olympic Games accompanied by three gold medals
  • In 2000 she was named one of the Athletes of the 20th Century by the Laureus World Sports Academy

Margo Oberg

  • Born in Pennsylvania, Oberg would go on to be the first female professional surfer in the world (1975)
  • She would win the WISA Hang Ten Championship and the women’s event at the Smirnoff World Pro-Am Surfing Championships
  • After coming in first on the overall surfer magazine poll in 1978 she quit surfing to build herself a house before returning to win her fourth and fifth world titles in 1980 and 1981
