In a megafight that will exceed spectacle and generate millions of dollars, Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor will finally face-off to see who can conquer one another in the ring.
On August 26th, whether you are taking a deuce in the bathroom, keeping up with your Mom’s grocery list, or painting the next Mona Lisa, your attention will be seized. Not because you like boxing or anything but because you know everyone will be talking about the megafight. Just like the solar eclipse we just saw, you won’t want to be the one that missed it.
Twitter feeds will be filled with Mayweather and McGregor memes and crappy phone videos of the fight. They will own the trending slots. Facebook statuses and tweets will feature people watching the fight or crying to the world that they could give a damn about it…even though they’re commenting on it. We’re in for a cultural mosaic on Saturday.
How did this spectacle become one in the first place? By the participants in the fight: Mayweather and McGregor themselves. Both great showmen at heart, no one in their respective sports knows how to amp up a great fight any more than these two.
Mayweather is a defensive counter wizard, capitalizing on his speed and smaller stature to usurp his opponents, resulting in an unblemished boxing career. McGregor, however, is a free-flowing, movement heavy mixed martial artist who doesn’t specialize in one area of martial arts. He incorporates several into his diet. Those include Kickboxing, Capoeira, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and more. Unfortunately, none of those will help him Saturday as the megafight will be under boxing rules.
Will The Notorious upset Money Mayweather? Will Mayweather taunt and toy with McGregor, bringing his record to 50-0. Will you regret spending $100 on pay-per-view and betting your mortgage for this megafight? We’ll find out soon enough!
