Did you know that addiction, according to US News and World Report, is America’s most neglected disease? According to a Columbia University study, 40 million Americans 12 years and over meet the clinical criteria for addiction involving nicotine, alcohol or other drugs. This means there are more Americans suffering with addiction than those suffering with heart disease, diabetes, or cancer.
According to the National Institute on Drug Health (NIH), “It is estimated that between 26.4 million and 36 million people abuse opioids worldwide, with an estimated 2.1 million people in the United States suffering from substance use disorders related to prescription opioid pain relievers in 2012 and an estimated 467,000 addicted to heroin.”
For people suffering with addiction, most are only familiar with the options of Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. I was surprised to find out that, according to Gabrielle Glaser (in her story called “The Irrationality of Alcoholics Anonymous,” featured in The Atlantic Monthly, April 2015), the success rate of those who pursue these avenues is between five and eight percent.
If you’re a professional whose career dictates that your body always be in peak performance and you want to improve longevity, seeking natural alternatives to aid various forms of recovery is likely a wise approach. The information and research on essential oils is worthy of consideration as a beneficial modality to increase one’s vitality on many different fronts. There are numerous studies that demonstrate the benefits of CPTG essential oils on the brain and other major organs and systems of the body.
Before we dive into the research on human biology and the science behind the scent, let’s start with some of the vital facts about essential oils to help you understand the importance of efficacy and how that will impact the results you can expect.
Essential oils: No two grades are created equal
Did you know that essential oils were our first form of medicine, and their usage dates back thousands of years? They were used in religious practices and ancient rituals across various civilizations, from the Egyptians to the Greeks. Chances are that you have them all throughout your home: muscle ointments, pain relief sprays, air fresheners, shampoos, conditioners, toothpaste, hand soaps, lotions, cleaning products, even chewing gum, etc. There’s just one problem: the grade! Most, if not all, commercial products are formulated with synthetic versions of essential oils that can actually be harmful to your health. The National Academy of Sciences reports that 95 percent of chemicals used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum (read: crude oil) known to cause cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders, and allergic reactions.
The fact is that no two brands are created equal. If you’ve ever used an essential oil and experienced marginal to no health shifts or adverse reactions, perhaps it was due to the compromisedor adulterated quality. However, using oils that have not been subjected to such dangerous tampering practices can lead to some very remarkable health benefits. As more and more people seek out options that they can rely on without experiencing detrimental side effects, essential oils are now not only gaining more popularity, but they are considered by many reputable health institutions to be a complimentary form of medicine.
How essential oils work
Molecularly, essential oils are very complex, consisting of hundreds of different aromatic compounds. This complexity means that they can be used in very diverse ways. They also have the potential to deliver a very broad spectrum of health benefits, but, in order to do so, the oils must be in their original pure, unadulterated form.
Did you know that your sense of smell is your only sense connected directly to the limbic system? This means that what you breathe is reaching and affecting your brain. That’s why using the proper grade is so crucial to consider. If you think that it’s no big deal to just breathe in an essential oil that has been tampered with and of inferior quality, think again!
Here’s how it works: When you inhale an essential oil, the odor molecules (aromatic compounds) travel through your nostrils to the olfactory membranes inside your nose. These molecules trigger electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb in the brain, causing a series of reactions in the limbic system, which moderates our emotions, breathing, and heart ratel. Your sense of smell triggers emotional responses in a matter of seconds.
Studies performed at the Vienna and Berlin universities demonstrated an increase in brain function of up to 28 percent under the influence of oils such as Vetiver, Patchouli, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, and Frankincense. Your brain can either lower your acuity if you use inferior quality oils or help you feel a bit closer to Einstein when you choose to work with the proper and highest grade.
Third party testing: Why you should insist on!
The essential oil industry is unregulated. This can lead to dissatisfying, minimal,or lno results. Misleading label claims lead to dangerous long-term side effects such as hormone disruption, a weakened immune and respiratory system, decreased fertility, etc. Therefore, stringent scientific testing should be non-negotiable when working with essential oils. I recommend and insist that oils be CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade) and third-party tested.
What does Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade mean?
- The plants are grown and harvested in their natural habitat.
- The essential oils are beyond organic; verified pure; and free of fillers, alcohol, pesticides, fungicides,or any harmful contaminants.
- The essential oils are third-party tested.
- CPTG is based on 24 stringent scientific tests that are performed on every batch of essential oil.
- Every batch is then shipped to and tested by a third-party scientific lab.
- Upon return to the company, every batch is then re-tested before being bottled to assure absolute purity.
Third-party testing guarantees that there is no bias and that there are no harmful ingredients in the essential oil that could potentially alter nature’s intent. This allows us to rely on the benefits and efficacy that the oil is truly intended to deliver 20 hospitals insist on using the CPTG standard, and national clinics will soon follow suit.
What causes addiction
Most addictions are born out of a deep desire to connect our hearts to our surroundings. The addictions become reactions to pain related to circumstances or people that are dangerous and challenging to withstand. To divert our attention, numb our sensations, and seemingly keep us safe, we may opt for substances, behaviors, and relationships that align with the low or stagnant vibrations of our environments in our past or present lives. It’s evident that there is a very valid emotional component that addresses this issue, and, as outlined earlier, the brain is capable and responsible for mood management via the limbic system via essential oil inhalation. Feelings such as sadness, anger, judgment, and low self-esteem that shift us to use or choose poor options are the symptoms of that low and stagnant vibration. They keep us in the cycles of addiction.
Regardless of the recovery you seek—from unhealthy relationships to food, dieting, alcohol, and drugs, you may want to consider using essential oils for additional emotional and behavioral support.
The neuroscience of smell
To further understand how CPTG essential oils impact emotions and behavior, let’s take a look at the recent scientific study performed by Dr. Rena Szabo, PsyD, CAADC, MA, Med, the director of the psychology department at an integrative oncology clinic. Based on the basic function of essential oils on the Limbics System, she performed a year-long study on the impact of six different CPTG essential oil blends on the providers at this clinic:
37-44 percent had struggled with compassion fatigue
32-78 percent had experienced symptoms of burnout
Since the sense of smell is 10,000 times more sensitive than the other senses of the body, a Szabo decided to determine the effects of diffusing the oils during all hours of her employees’ workday. For the first six months, no oils were diffused. For the next six months, Szabo diffused a different emotionally formulated oil blend each month. Every employee was surveyed weekly.
Here are the results of her 12-month study:
- Stress levels before oils were 69 percent. After diffusing the oils, that rate dropped to 49 percent.
- 61 percent felt overwhelmed before the oils. Afterdiffusing the oils, that percentage dropped to 32 percent.
- There was a significant increase in positive feelings and a huge decrease in negative feelings (from 75 percent to 58 percent).
- Positive feelings by specific proprietary blends were increased by 100 percent.
- Negative feelings by a specific proprietary blend decreased by 68 percent.
- A specific proprietary blend decreased anxiousness, apathy, gloom, and anger.
- A specific proprietary blend reduced feelings of bitterness, disinterest, and discouragement.
The results of Szabo’s clinical study were not only beneficial to the staff but also improved the quality of care the patients received. Since most if not all of these emotions that Szabo tracked are feelings one may experience when working through various stages of recovery, we ca most likely consider them relevant and potentially reliable.
Why use essential oils
Effectiveness: Essential Oils are 50 percent to 70 percent more powerful than herbs.
Cell Function: One drop of essential oil contains 40 quintillion molecules! Their complexity enables them to pass through the cell membrane and, according to David Stewart, Ph.D., R.A., “ cross the blood-brain barrier.”
Adaptogenic/Non-Addictive: Essential oils promote and restore normal physiological functioning. They provide complex and versatile abilities to combat threats without building up resistance. They also do not carry any harmful side effects when used properly.
