There’s a lot about OSEA that stands out in the vast sea of skincare companies. First, there’s the love affair with seaweed. The company’s main ingredient is thoroughly infused into a nutrient-rich product line that promises to deliver vital, regenerative properties to your skin.
OSEA also raises the bar with its ethical business practices—a commitment to ecological responsibility and strong, transparent relationships with its ingredient sources. But perhaps the most inspiring fact about OSEA is that it’s a company deeply rooted in the tradition of family. OSEA founder, Jenefer Palmer, speaks of a long line of women in her family who were inspired by the sea. The company’s legacy goes back to Palmer’s grandmother, Elsa Reuschle, who had been one of the first female chiropractors in the United States. Reuschle had made seaweed poultices for her patients and believed that the sea’s mineral properties had remarkable healing effects.
Following her grandmother’s footsteps, Palmer acquired proficiency in many healing modalities and therapies including polarity therapy and acupressure then went on to become a spa director, a role that launched her into skincare research. Infuriated by the fact that most skincare products contained unregulated and toxic synthetic ingredients that sometimes included harmful carcinogens, she developed a passionate commitment to change the game in the skincare industry. This is how OSEA was born. In this interview, she tells us a little more about the secret of seaweed and the OSEA story.
Seaweed is the ultimate skin superfood! It contains an ultra-abundant source of minerals, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamins. These full-spectrum marine nutrients are bioavailable, which means that they are readily absorbed and utilized to transform and restore skin to its most amazing appearance.
Why did you keep going throughout the years? What was the motivation?
I launched OSEA in 1996––at a time when there were very few natural luxury skincare brands on the market. I’ve been hustling ever since because I’m truly obsessed with seaweed and wellness. Twenty-three years later, the landscape of green beauty has improved, but there are still thousands of harmful chemicals that remain unregulated in personal care products. The desire to change these staggering statistics and continue to provide a trusted, clean beauty brand has kept me motivated throughout the years. As an advocate for women’s health, I’ve testified before the California State Senate and participated in numerous personal care safety initiatives. We still have a long way to go. And I’m never giving up.
Malibu was my family’s home for 22 years and the birthplace of OSEA. I could see the Pacific Ocean from my window while I formulated our first products in my kitchen sink and had children playing at my feet. Our home was sadly destroyed in the Woolsey Fire last year. However, Malibu and the Pacific Ocean remain the source of my most profound creative inspirations.
Why is it important to keep business in the family and create a family-like atmosphere?
OSEA has a company culture fueled by love. This is in large part the result of having my loving family run our company. My daughter Melissa Palmer is our CEO. My husband runs our operations. My other daughter Mary LeGassick manages our social media. Our employees are like an extension of our family. We want them to be happy, flourish, and be well. We have frequent communal lunches and meditate weekly at the end of our team meetings. Maintaining friendly family vibes is a major part of our success.
OSEA stands for Ocean, Sun, Earth, and Atmosphere. These are the four core elements and are the inspiration behind our ingredients. They also embody the four elements of wellness, which speaks to the very heart and soul of our brand.
