5 Ways to Think Yourself Happy

PMA all day. It’s become my mantra. I’ve lived most of my adult life not even knowing what a mantra was. Little did I know, it had the power to change my life.

PMA stands for positive mental attitude, a concept that was introduced by Napoleon Hill in his book Think and Grow Rich. It is the philosophy that having an optimistic mindset will attract positive outcomes in all facets of your life.

I’ve always been an energetic multi-tasker. Slowing down was never an option. My mind was in a constant state of planning, worrying and exhausting itself with an endless supply of mental lists. If you asked me if my glass was half full or empty, I’d likely say full, however, I never really stopped to think about it…

Some positive thinkers are born that way, but in most cases, they train themselves. I belong to the latter. Choosing to live your life focused on positivity requires you to govern your thoughts in order to guide the dialogue in your head to take on a brighter tone. The only way to exert this kind of control is to learn to be present.


The lesson of living in the “now” wasn’t easy for me. Regrets invited me to keep living comfortably in the past, and anxiety seduced me to try to control the future. Letting go on both counts freed me.

Once I decided to treat myself with the same kindness it was so easy to show others, light started to shine in on the darkness. I forgave myself for past mistakes, and soon the hurt turned to scars, which have since started healing. I stopped myself from worrying about things that were out of my control.

I’ve come to realize that living in the present is not only possible for everyone to do, but it’s a more pleasant place to spend your time. And once you teach yourself how to be present in the moment, you then gift yourself the opportunity to be happier and more fulfilled.

Stepping back to contemplate the source of my uncomfortable, frantic, unsatisfied state, I realized my state of mind was the key. I was living as a slave to my thoughts, as many of us do. It is possible to take back the control and to make a conscious effort to have a positive mental attitude. The payoff to yourself and everyone you cross paths with is invaluable. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

And read some more. Immerse yourself in words. There are so many powerful books available that focus on positivity, living in the present, and thinking your way to a happier place. Some are written by doctors or experts, others by everyday people sharing life experiences.
A couple of my favorites include Approaching the Natural by Sid Garza-Hillman and The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. 

Create a morning routine

Your morning is pivotal in creating positive energy and setting the tone for your day. No matter how busy a day you have ahead of you, choose to take this precious time for yourself and stay consistent.

Many successful people attribute their productivity and creativity to their morning habits.

Hal Elrod, an ultra-marathon runner and author of The Morning Miracle, writes:
“How you wake up each day and your morning routine (or lack thereof) dramatically affects your levels of success in every single area of your life. Focused, productive, successful mornings generate focused, productive, successful days – which inevitably create a successful life – in the same way that unfocused, unproductive and mediocre mornings generate unfocused, unproductive, and mediocre days, and ultimately a mediocre quality of life. By simply changing the way you wake up in the morning, you can transform any area of your life, faster than you ever thought possible.”
My first moments include warm lemon water, yoga and writing. Routines give me a sense of control, which in turn lessen my anxiety.

Move your body

Exercise is as beneficial for your mind as it is for your body. Endorphins are real. Find an activity you enjoy and break a sweat. Daily.

There have been countless studies done to demonstrate the positive effects of incorporating physical activity into our daily lives, both on mental and physical health.

Here are just a few examples from the Mayo Clinic: controls weight, combats health conditions and diseases, improves mood, boosts energy, promotes better sleep, and may even put the spark back into your sex life. Convinced yet?

Running is my first love, but as long as my day includes some form of exercise, it’s a good one.

Surround yourself with positive people and distance yourself from toxic ones

Your time is precious, so choose to spend it with the humans (and non-humans) that lift you up. This would also be a good time to ditch any toxic habits you might have.

Practice self-love in any and all ways that feel good for you

Nourish your body with nutrient-rich, vibrant foods. Explore your creativity. Choose to focus on the positive, no matter the circumstances. Stop comparing yourself to others and constantly seeking approval. Celebrate your strength each time you show up, regardless of the outcome. Always choose yourself. Practice gratitude every day. Find your happy place.
